Study in Australia: Entry Requirements for International Students

If you are a Filipino student and have decided to study in Australia, there are Australia student visa requirements and many other requirements you may have to meet.

English Language Requirements

In some cases, you'll be required to provide results of an English language test.  You need to keep in mind that the language skills required by a university or institution may be different from the level of skills required for your visa application.  So, you need to check the visa information carefully at the DIBP website and the institution’s website.

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements will also vary depending on the level of education you want to gain in Australia.  Educational institutions can ask you to fulfil different entry requirements, so you better read the program/course information on their website and contact them for seeking advice.

The following is a general guidance on entry requirements for different levels of study:

  • English language: Requirements often vary between institutions, and according to the level of the chosen English language course.

  • Vocational education and training: In many cases, you are not required to sit for an entrance exam for VET institutions. But, some courses may have particular pre-requisite subject or work experience and requirements.

  • Higher education undergraduate: To find an entry into an Australian institution under an undergraduate course, you must have an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate Education or the overseas equivalent.

  • Higher education postgraduate: At least one degree at undergraduate level. However, your chosen institution may take relevant work experience or research ability under consideration.
Visa requirements

The visa you need depends more on your chosen course.  As a guide, some general requirements you need to meet are:
  • Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment certificate
  • Proof of English language proficiency. Tests such as IELTS, Pearson Test of English, TOEFL etc. are recognised by most of the educational institutions in Australia.
  • Sufficient funds for tuition fees, living expenses, and airfares
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Acceptable OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)
Overseas Student Health Cover

Australia has a system of health cover for overseas students namely Overseas Student Health Cover.  It assists you in paying for medical care you may need when you are studying in Australia.  When you study in Australia, you will need a health cover for yourself before you reach there.
