How the PTE Exam Scoring Method Outshines Other English Proficiency Test?

If you are willing to take admission in an Australian or New Zealand university, the first thing that you need to do is to show your English language proficiency. In fact, if you belong to the non-English-speaking nation and are planning to pursue your studies in an English-speaking country, you must produce evidence of your English language proficiency. And to do so, you need to appear for a standardised English test.

There are many English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson Test of  English (PTE) etc. Though each test has its pros and cons, PTE, being the newest of them all, has the edge over other tests. In other exams, your communicative skills like reading, writing, speaking and listening are scored, while PTE takes into account many different factors that allow you to reach your target as well as help you see where you are weak and strong.

First, the PTE evaluates a test taker’s oral fluency, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and written discourse individually in the test taker’s writing and speaking sections. The test does this not only by examining the test taker’s skills but also his/her ability to answer questions. In this sort of scoring, if a candidate commits a mistake in following some instruction or attempting an answer, she/he could still earn points for the test item. In other English language tests, this type of scoring method is not employed. Hence, if a candidate falters in answering a question, she/he will automatically score a zero in that test item no matter whether her/his vocabulary was exemplary.

Another Interesting aspect of the PTE exam scoring is that sub-skills are often tested in the evaluation of the four communicative skills, i.e. reading, writing, speaking and listening. Meaning, a candidate would be able to earn partial points in questions that have integrated skill items such as those found in writing and reading questions. If all the points from these items were added, a candidate would be able to get more points which could translate into a higher overall score.

The PTE score is recognised and accepted by the leading educational institutions throughout the globe. However, if you want to study in New Zealand, you may think of taking PTE as all New Zealand universities recognise the test as evidence of English language proficiency.
